Dolphin House Snorkeling Tour Hurghada – Swim with Wild Dolphins

📅 Updated: May 2026  |  ⏱️ Full-Day Tour · 7–8 hrs  |  💶 From €35 / person  |  ⭐ 4.9/5 Rated  |  🐬 90% Dolphin Sighting Rate

The Dolphin House snorkeling tour from Hurghada is the most extraordinary wildlife encounter available on Egypt’s Red Sea coast — and one of the most remarkable marine experiences on the planet. Unlike dolphin shows in captivity or staged pool interactions, this is a 100% natural wildlife encounter: wild, free-swimming spinner dolphins in their own habitat, choosing whether to approach, swim alongside, and play near the snorkelers who enter their water.

Dolphin House — officially known as Sha’ab El Erg, a horseshoe-shaped reef system located approximately 25 km northeast of Hurghada Marina — is home to a resident pod of Indo-Pacific spinner dolphins that rest in the protected inner lagoon during daylight hours. The horseshoe shape creates a naturally sheltered inner lagoon with a sandy bottom and shallow depths, perfect for snorkelers and beginner divers. This 2026 guide covers everything you need: the full hour-by-hour itinerary, what makes Dolphin House unique, the marine life you’ll encounter, pricing, ethical guidelines for swimming with dolphins, packing tips, and honest answers to every question travellers ask before booking.

🐬 90% dolphin sighting rate: Captains use GPS and fish finder technology on board to locate the dolphin pods within the Dolphin House habitat. Tours depart early morning when dolphins are most active and the sea is at its calmest. While no wildlife encounter can ever be 100% guaranteed, the Dolphin House consistently delivers one of the highest sighting rates of any dolphin experience in the world.

What Is Dolphin House? Sha’ab El Erg Explained

Dolphin House is the nickname given by local guides and tourists to Sha’ab El Erg — one of the most remarkable reef systems in the northern Red Sea. Sha’ab El Erg is a horseshoe-shaped reef approximately 7 km in length, situated between Hurghada and El Gouna, with a small lagoon scattered with ergs at its centre. It is one of the natural habitats in the Red Sea of a large group of spinner dolphins.

The name “Sha’ab El Erg” translates from Arabic as “Reef of the Dunes” — a reference to the sandy, dome-shaped underwater formations (ergs) that dot the inner lagoon floor. The unique horseshoe structure creates a naturally sheltered inner lagoon with a sandy bottom and shallow depths, which is a magnet for marine life, especially the resident pods of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins.

What makes Dolphin House exceptional is not just the dolphins — it is the combination of a protected inner lagoon perfect for beginners and children, dramatic outer reef walls for experienced snorkelers, and a resident dolphin pod that has chosen this spot as its daytime resting ground year after year. The site sits in waters ranging from 8 to 30 metres deep. The inner lagoon averages just 8–10 metres, perfect for snorkelers. Visibility underwater often exceeds 40 metres thanks to the Red Sea’s clear, warm waters.

🐬 Why Wild Dolphins Choose Sha’ab El Erg

The horseshoe shape of the reef creates a naturally calm, protected lagoon that shields the dolphin pod from open-sea currents and predators. The sandy, shallow floor of the lagoon is ideal for resting after their nightly feeding runs. The dolphins do not live here permanently — they rest here during daylight hours and return to open water to hunt at night. This predictable daily pattern is what makes Dolphin House one of the most reliable wild dolphin encounter sites in the world.

Wild spinner dolphins swimming freely in the clear water — beneath you, around you, sometimes within arm’s reach (though touching is strictly prohibited). 01:00 – 02:00 PM — Lunch

The Dolphins of Sha’ab El Erg — Everything You Need to Know

The dolphins at Dolphin House are Indo-Pacific Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) — named for their acrobatic spinning leaps out of the water that have made them famous. They are one of the most social and playful dolphin species in the world, and their natural curiosity about humans is what makes the Sha’ab El Erg encounter so extraordinary.

🐬
Why Dolphins Come to Dolphin House
The sheltered inner lagoon offers protection from currents and predators, making it an ideal daytime resting spot. The pod feeds at sea during the night and rests here during the day — a predictable pattern that has continued for years.
🌀
The Famous Spinning Leap
Spinner dolphins get their name from their distinctive aerial behaviour — leaping out of the water and spinning up to seven times in a single jump. Scientists believe spinning helps remove parasites and serves as social communication within the pod. Witnessing it is unforgettable.
🧠
Intelligence & Social Behaviour
Spinner dolphins live in pods of up to several hundred individuals. They communicate through clicks and whistles — you can hear them underwater. They demonstrate curiosity, play, and coordinated group behaviour that reflects their extraordinary intelligence.
🌙
Day vs Night Behaviour
Spinner dolphins are nocturnal hunters — they feed in deeper waters at night, chasing fish and squid in the darkness using echolocation. During the day, they rest in sheltered shallow reefs like Sha’ab El Erg. This is why morning tours offer the highest sighting probability.
🐬 How to Maximise Your Dolphin Encounter: The dolphins will approach on their own terms — your job is to be in the water, staying still and parallel to their direction of travel. If you swim towards dolphins, they will often go away. But most of the time they start to play and want to impress swimmers with their unusual movements and pirouettes. The calmer and more patient you are, the closer they come.

Marine Life Guide — Dolphins & Beyond at Sha’ab El Erg

Sha’ab El Erg is one of the most biodiverse reef systems in the northern Red Sea. The dolphin encounter is the headline act — but the supporting cast is equally extraordinary. Here is what to look for during your snorkeling sessions:

🐬
Spinner Dolphins
The resident pod of Indo-Pacific Spinner Dolphins. Resting in the lagoon during the day. Approach them calmly and parallel — they will come to you.
🐠
Parrotfish
Large, vivid blue-green fish you’ll hear before you see — their crunching of coral is clearly audible underwater. Among the most common reef fish at Sha’ab El Erg.
🦋
Butterflyfish & Angelfish
Yellow-and-white butterflyfish always swim in pairs along the reef wall. Regal angelfish with their vivid blue and orange stripes are among the most photographed fish in the Red Sea.
🔵
Blue-Spotted Ray
Rest on the sandy bottom of the lagoon between coral heads. Electric blue spots on a flat grey body — effortlessly graceful as they glide away. Common at Sha’ab El Erg’s sandy areas.
🐍
Moray Eels
Green and spotted moray eels live inside coral crevices throughout Sha’ab El Erg — just the head visible, slowly opening and closing. Harmless when not provoked.
🐡
Pufferfish
Found near sandy patches between coral heads. Gentle and slow-moving — inflates as a defence mechanism if threatened. Never chase or touch.
🐠
Clownfish (Nemo)
Living in sea anemones at the shallow reef sections. Bright orange-and-white. Will not swim away — come within 30 cm for the perfect photograph.
👑
Napoleon Wrasse
One of the largest and most distinctive reef fish — a huge, blue-green fish with a pronounced forehead hump. Present at Sha’ab El Erg and surprisingly friendly toward snorkelers.
🌿
Garden Eels
Hundreds of thin eels emerging from the sandy bottom of the lagoon, swaying in the current like a field of grass. They instantly retract if you approach — one of the reef’s most enchanting sights.
🦈
Reef Sharks (Outer Wall)
The outer reef walls drop deeper, giving greater chances to spot reef sharks and larger pelagic species. Harmless, shy, and rarely seen by snorkelers at the surface level.

Ethical Guidelines — How to Swim with Wild Dolphins Responsibly

Swimming with wild dolphins is a privilege, not a right. The dolphins at Sha’ab El Erg are wild, free animals that choose to rest in this location — they are not trained, not incentivised with food, and they are under no obligation to interact with humans. Respecting these guidelines is essential to protect their wellbeing and maintain this extraordinary experience for future visitors.

🚫
Never Touch the Dolphins
No touching, no grabbing, no attempting to ride. This is strictly enforced by the guide and captain. Touching disrupts the dolphins’ protective skin layer and causes stress to the animal.
🏊
Swim Parallel, Not Toward Them
Enter the water and swim parallel to the direction the dolphins are moving — never swim directly toward them. Swimming at them is threatening behaviour that causes the pod to retreat. Parallel swimming triggers curiosity and approach.
🤫
Stay Calm & Quiet
Splashing, shouting, and rapid movements disturb the dolphins. The guests who have the most magical encounters are those who float still on the surface and let the dolphins choose to approach. Patience is the single most effective technique.
🚤
Respect the Boat Approach Protocol
Captains are trained to approach the dolphin pod slowly, downwind, and without cutting across their path. If the dolphins show signs of stress (rapid direction changes, diving deep), the captain will move the boat away to allow them to settle.
🌊 Why This Matters

Irresponsible dolphin tourism is a serious issue in many destinations. At Sha’ab El Erg, Hurghada Excursion strictly follows eco-friendly protocols that prioritise the dolphins’ wellbeing over the guests’ desire for close contact. These guidelines are not optional — they are the reason the dolphins continue to choose this reef as their resting ground year after year. By booking responsibly, you contribute directly to the preservation of this experience for future generations.

Best Time of Year for the Dolphin House Tour from Hurghada

The Dolphin House tour operates year-round, but dolphin sighting rates, sea conditions, and comfort levels vary significantly by season. Here is what to expect across the year:

Season Water Temp Sea Conditions Dolphin Activity Verdict
Mar – May 24–27°C Calm Very High Excellent
Jun – Sep 28–30°C Very calm High Good — hot on deck (35–42°C)
Oct – Nov 26–28°C Calm High Excellent
Dec – Feb 22–24°C Variable Moderate Good — cooler, possible swell
🐬 Peak Dolphin Season

Between April and October is the prime period to visit Dolphin House Hurghada. At this time, the sea is warm and calm, which increases your chances of spotting dolphins as well as ensuring seamless boat rides. Early morning excursions are favoured since they tend to be less crowded and dolphin activity is higher.

What to Pack — Dolphin House Tour Checklist

🧴 Reef-Safe Sunscreen — Essential. Standard chemical sunscreens damage the coral reefs of Sha’ab El Erg. Use mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) SPF 50 only — available in Hurghada pharmacies. Apply 30 minutes before entering the water and reapply every 90 minutes on deck.

📱 Waterproof phone case. The dolphin encounter happens at the water surface where a simple waterproof phone pouch works perfectly — no expensive underwater camera required. This is the single most important item to bring for capturing your dolphin experience. A €3–€5 pouch from any Hurghada market is sufficient.

👙 Swimwear and rash guard. A long-sleeved UV rash guard is strongly recommended — it protects your back and shoulders during extended time in the water, adds buoyancy for the dolphin encounters, and keeps you comfortable. Bring a dry change of clothes for the return journey.

💊 Anti-sickness medication. The crossing to Sha’ab El Erg (45–60 minutes) involves open water that can have gentle swell, particularly in winter months. If you are prone to motion sensitivity, take an anti-sickness tablet one hour before departure. The trip is genuinely one of the calmest sea crossings in Egypt — but preparation removes all uncertainty.

💰 Small amount of EGP cash. For tips and any personal extras. EGP 100–200 is sufficient for the entire day. As of May 2026: £1 ≈ 65 EGP. Keep cash sealed in a waterproof bag during snorkeling.

Suitable for Families, Children & Non-Swimmers?

Yes — the Dolphin House tour is one of the most family-friendly excursions in Hurghada. Reviewers consistently highlight it as the highlight of family holidays, with children describing the dolphin encounter as the best experience of their lives. The tour is specifically designed to be accessible to all ability levels.

Children under 4 travel free. Children aged 4–11 pay €20.
Life vests provided for all non-swimmers and children — no swimming ability required to see the dolphins.
Non-swimmers wearing a life vest can float at the surface and experience the dolphin encounter fully.
Family members who prefer not to enter the water can observe the dolphin encounter from the boat deck — from the boat you have amazing views of the dolphins.
Children’s snorkeling masks in small sizes provided — mention children’s ages at booking.
The banana boat ride is a particular favourite with children aged 5–16 — an exciting addition to what is already an extraordinary day.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Tip

Brief your children before entering the water: stay calm, don’t splash, don’t try to touch the dolphins, and float still on the surface. Children who follow these simple instructions almost always have extraordinary dolphin encounters. Children who splash and lunge rarely see them up close. A 2-minute conversation before entering the water makes all the difference.

10 Expert Tips from Our Dolphin House Guides

Tip 1 — Book the earliest available departure. Early morning excursions are favoured since they tend to be less crowded and dolphin activity is higher. Morning also means the sea is at its calmest, the light is most beautiful, and you arrive at Dolphin House before the afternoon influx of other boats.

Tip 2 — Float still on the surface rather than swimming. The single most effective dolphin encounter technique. Floating motionless and looking downward is far more likely to result in dolphins approaching than any amount of swimming toward them. Your guide will position you correctly — trust the process.

Tip 3 — Listen underwater. Spinner dolphins communicate constantly through clicks, whistles, and echolocation pulses. Put your head beneath the surface before you even see them and listen — the sound of an approaching dolphin pod is extraordinary and will tell you where they are before your eyes can find them.

Tip 4 — Bring a waterproof phone case, not a full GoPro kit. The dolphin encounter happens at the surface at 1–2 metres depth. A simple waterproof phone pouch captures perfectly good footage and photographs without the weight, cost, and distraction of complex camera equipment. Keep it simple — you want to experience the dolphins, not film a documentary.

Tip 5 — Don’t be disappointed if the dolphins don’t come close on the first entry. The guide will usually allow 2–3 separate water entries at the Dolphin House. Many guests have their best encounter on the second or third entry, once the pod has had time to acclimate to the group’s presence. Patience across multiple entries consistently delivers better results than one frantic session.

Tip 6 — Watch the garden eels at the snorkeling stops. One of Sha’ab El Erg’s most enchanting sights — hundreds of thin eels emerging from the sandy lagoon floor, swaying in the current like a field of grass, instantly retracting as you approach. Most guests walk straight past them looking for bigger marine life. Ask your guide to point them out.

Tip 7 — Wear a rash guard for the dolphin encounter. Dolphin encounters involve significant time floating at the surface in direct sun. A long-sleeved UV rash guard protects your entire back and arms without requiring you to reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes while in the water. It also provides buoyancy assistance for nervous swimmers.

Tip 8 — Eat a light breakfast before the trip. The crossing to Sha’ab El Erg is approximately 45–60 minutes across open water. Toast, fruit, and yoghurt is better than a full hotel breakfast before any boat trip. The banana boat ride is also far more enjoyable on a light stomach.

Tip 9 — Tip the crew generously if you have an exceptional experience. The Dolphin House guides and boat crew work exceptionally hard — finding the dolphins, managing water entries safely, ensuring every guest has time with the pod, and running the snorkeling sessions simultaneously. A tip of €5–€10 per person reflects genuine appreciation for a genuinely outstanding day.

Tip 10 — Do not use chemical sunscreen. This applies at Dolphin House just as at Giftun Island. Chemical sunscreen washes off in the water and is directly toxic to the coral polyps that form the Sha’ab El Erg reef system. The dolphins’ habitat depends on this reef. Mineral sunscreen is equally effective and causes no harm — use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dolphin sightings guaranteed at Dolphin House Hurghada?
Dolphin sightings cannot be 100% guaranteed — these are wild, free animals. However, the captain uses GPS and fish finder technology to locate the dolphin pod within the Dolphin House habitat, and the sighting rate on morning departures is approximately 90%. In the rare case that dolphins are not encountered, the tour continues with the snorkeling programme and you will receive a partial credit toward a future booking.
Do I need to be a good swimmer to swim with the dolphins?
No swimming ability is required. Life vests are provided for all non-swimmers and children. Non-swimmers wearing a life vest can float at the surface and fully experience the dolphin encounter — the dolphins swim at the surface level, not deep underwater. Many of the most moving dolphin encounters on our tours have been had by guests who cannot swim a single stroke.
How far is Dolphin House from Hurghada?
Dolphin House (Sha’ab El Erg) is a shallow coral reef located approximately 25 kilometres off the coast of Hurghada. The boat journey from Hurghada marina takes approximately 45–60 minutes depending on sea conditions and the speed of the vessel. Private speedboat charters can reach the site in approximately 25–30 minutes.
Can I touch or feed the dolphins?
No — touching and feeding the dolphins is strictly prohibited and enforced by the guide. Touching disrupts the dolphins’ protective skin layer and causes them stress. Feeding alters their natural behaviour and diet. These rules exist to protect the animals and are non-negotiable. The encounter is entirely on the dolphins’ terms — they choose whether to approach, and they choose how close to come. This is what makes it an authentic, ethical wildlife experience.
What is the best time of day for the dolphin encounter?
Early morning departures (arriving at Dolphin House between 10:00 and 11:30 AM) consistently produce the highest dolphin encounter rates. The dolphins are resting in the lagoon after their overnight feeding runs and the site has fewer other boats than the afternoon period. All Hurghada Excursion Dolphin House tours depart early to take advantage of this window.
Is the Dolphin House tour different from Dolphin House in Marsa Alam?
Yes — Dolphin House Hurghada (Sha’ab El Erg) and the Dolphin House reefs near Marsa Alam (Sataya and Samadai) are entirely different sites, approximately 200 km apart. Our tour visits Sha’ab El Erg — the reef between Hurghada and El Gouna, accessible in 45–60 minutes from Hurghada marina. This is the primary dolphin snorkeling destination for guests staying in Hurghada, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay, and Soma Bay.
What is included in the Dolphin House tour price?
Included from €35 per adult: round-trip hotel transfer, full day on the boat, licensed guide, full snorkeling equipment, life vests, wild dolphin encounter at Sha’ab El Erg, two snorkeling stops, banana boat ride, fresh buffet lunch, and unlimited soft drinks and water throughout the day. There are no hidden charges. Children aged 4–11 pay €20. Children under 4 travel free.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?
The Red Sea is one of the calmest seas in the world and weather cancellations are rare in Hurghada — perhaps 5–10 days per year in winter months. If sea conditions are deemed unsafe by the captain, we will offer you a full refund or priority rebooking on the next available departure at no extra charge. We monitor conditions 24 hours in advance and will contact you the evening before your trip if we anticipate any issues.
